"Monique was a great person. She was beautiful inside and out. She loved her kids. Her kids were her life. She was a single mother co-parenting with her ex-husband. And they did a great job just taking care of these kids and doing the best they could for them. She loved life. She loved to laugh. She worked hard.” said JD Maes.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said the man suspected of killing Monique Maes and injuring her two children on Paseo De Nopal in October is now in custody.
Police said Mario Israel Mendez was found in El Paso, Texas and after a multi-agency effort, he was arrested Friday evening.
"It was just an overwhelming sense of relief and really happiness for the two kids. They've been wondering when he's going to be caught for two months already. And just the fact that we know that he's in custody, the fact that we know he's going to face justice, it's really healing for everybody involved," said Maes.
JD Maes is grateful to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies for their response to his sister’s case. The charges Mendez is facing include two counts of child abuse, duty to give information and render aid, as well as tampering with evidence.
Mendez was booked into the El Paso county jail while awaiting transfer to New Mexico.
