North Providence church arson suspect reaches plea deal

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man accused of setting fires to a predominantly black church in North Providence has entered a plea deal, according to federal prosecutors.
34-year-old Kevin Colantonio of North Providence agreed to plea guilty to a hate crime, which is a minimum of 5 years in prison, with the maximum of 56 years.
According to official documents, Colantonio set several fires around the exterior of Shiloh Gospel Temple around midnight on Feb. 11.
The fire was quickly extinguished by North Providence Police and Fire Departments.
According to court documents, Colantonio agreed to plea guilty to “intentionally selected the church as the object of the arson because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, and/or ethnicity of the congregants.”
Colantonio also agreed to admit that while behind bars he threw feces mixed with urine at a correctional officer Wyatt Detention Facility who was serving breakfast.
