NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison on Friday in connection with a fatal shooting at a Norfolk 7-Eleven.
According to officials, on Dec. 1, 2023, around 10:30 p.m., 29-year-old Javon Jerome Reap entered the 7-Eleven located at 151 W. Little Creek Road, where he then approached 33-year-old Antwain Desean Curtis, shooting him once in the chest. Curtis was unarmed and died almost instantly, police said.

Following the shooting, Reap fled the scene in a vehicle. Police said the entire incident lasted around 10 seconds and was captured on multiple angles through the store's security cameras. After an investigation, warrants were secured against Reap for conspiring to commit second-degree murder, committing second-degree murder and using a firearm in commission of a felony.
In March of 2024, Reap was located in New York City, and was then transferred to custody in Norfolk in April of 2024.
During his trail in October, Reap said he was acting in self-defense, claiming that Curtis had threatened him — surveillance footage did not corroborate this claim.
On Oct. 24, after two hours of deliberation, Reap was found guilty as charged.

On Friday, Dec. 20, Judge Robert B. Rigney sentenced Reap to 21 years and 11 months in prison. Rigney also suspended an additional six years and one month on the condition that Reap be of uniform good behavior for three years and to comply with supervised probation for two years following his release.
"Mr. Reap murdered Mr. Curtis in cold blood, plain and simple," Commonwealth's Attorney Ramin Fatehi said. "That is why we tried him, that is why the jury convicted him, and that is why he will now serve more than two decades in prison. The core mission of my office is to prosecute and hold accountable the people who kill our fellow citizens. We have done so here today. I am grateful to the witnesses and law-enforcement officers who made it possible to do so, and I hope that this sentence brings some measure of closure to Mr. Curtis's family."
