ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) -- A retired Robeson County principal and former Darlington Middle School teacher was arrested in Columbus County on child sex abuse charges, authorities said. Paul Nelson Locklear, 53, of Pembroke, is charged with one count of sexual activity by a substitute parent, one count of attempted sexual activity by a substitute parent, three counts of indecent liberties with a minor, one count of child abuse sexual act, nine counts of crimes against nature and four counts of misdemeanor sexual battery. He's being held at the Robeson County Detention Center on a $2 million bond. Darlington County Public Schools spokeswoman Audrey Childers said on Saturday Locklear is no longer employed by the district, and officials are cooperating with investigators. "The Darlington County School District was made aware of charges by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office against an individual who worked at Darlington Middle School. That individual is no longer employed by the school district. DCSD will cooperate fully with Robeson County law enforcement in their investigations," she said. Authorities launched their investigation in August after a juvenile placed in Locklear's foster care ran away and contacted the sheriff's office. Officials said the discovered additional victims and allegations dating back to 2022. The Robeson County Sheriff's Office juvenile division is investigating. The Robeson County District Attorney's Office, FBI and Columbus County Sheriff's Office assisted. Anyone with information about the case(s) is asked to contact (910) 671-3170.
