CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The holidays bring joy and celebration, but they can also lead to a sharp rise in burn injuries, according to the South Carolina Burn Center at MUSC Health. Between Christmas Eve and Dec. 30, the center sees a 200% increase in burn-related cases, with a staggering 600% spike on New Year’s Eve due to fireworks and sparklers. Common injuries during the holidays include grease burns and scalds, affecting both adults and children. MUSC emphasizes the importance of safety precautions while cooking and handling fireworks to prevent accidents. For severe burn injuries, immediate care at a burn center is crucial. MUSC Health is home to the state’s only comprehensive burn center, serving adults and children alike. Pediatric burn care is provided at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, the state’s sole pediatric burn referral center. MUSC encourages families to stay vigilant, prioritize safety, and ensure the holiday season is memorable for all the right reasons.
