WICHITA, Kan (KSNW) - Eisenhower National Airport is seeing its highest non-summer flight numbers this week. Thousands are flying internationally and domestically. Numbers the airport typically sees on a busy summer day. The sound of planes taking off, bags clattering on the luggage carrousel and crowds walking echo as families say 'hello' or 'goodbye.' "As far as demographics, you see everything: singles, couples, families," Wichita Airport Authority Air Service and Marketing Manager Valerie Wise said. "[Sunday] looks like it's going to be one of the biggest travel days for the Christmas holiday period with over 2,900 people flying out." There is scarcely a venue more populated by reunion than an airport during the holidays. Carlton Collins and his family have been apart for more than four years. "[We are] waiting for my mom, my sister, husband and their son," Collins said. "For the past few years, we haven't been able to travel or connect, so this'll be the first time in awhile." He put roots down in Wichita over 12 years ago. Coming from California, long-distance travel has been logistically challenging and visits have been few and far between. Our interview was interrupted, however, by his family's arrival. Not a single member of Collins' family went without a hug. Collins' mother, Gloria Deane Franklin, only had one thing on her mind. "I just wanted to say, 'Carlton, my baby I missed you,’" Franklin said, outstretching her hand. Home for the holidays, the family's plans for quality time remained humble. "Playing cards, and visiting and sight-seeing. I hope it snows, because I want to see snow," Franklin said. If you expect a reunion of your own, and plan on flying out soon, airport officials have some advice: make sure you always arrive early, at least 90 minutes or two hours if your flight is international; check what can and can't be brought through a TSA checkpoint. The busiest days of the year are expected to be Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.
