(BCN) -- Marin County has reopened sections of Bolinas Beach under a health advisory, county officials announced. The decision follows new test results from the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, which found no evidence of human wastewater contamination, officials said. Parts of the beach were temporarily closed in September 2024 after liquid seepage, odors, and discoloration were observed on the bluffs. Initial tests showed bacteria and ammonia, raising public health concerns, according to officials. However, recent testing did not detect wastewater from septic systems, though risks remain from chronic fecal contamination from wildlife and pets. County officials have put up signs throughout the beach warning visitors of potential health risks and unstable conditions. The county advises against direct contact with water or sand near the bluffs and recommends washing hands after exposure. Efforts to address long-standing wastewater issues in the Bolinas Mesa area are ongoing. "We appreciate the community's patience and cooperation as we continue working to protect public health and support long-term solutions for Bolinas," said Dr. Lisa Santora, Public Health Officer for the County of Marin.
