ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in the area of Carlisle Blvd. and Claremont Avenue Sunday. Officials say one person was shot and transported to the hospital.
According to APD, officers first responded to an armed robbery at a Circle K in Northwest Albuquerque just before one this afternoon. APD says two men were seen in the store, one of which had a gun.
About thirty minutes later, officers responded to another armed robbery where they believe the same suspects were seen. The suspects and the vehicle they were last seen in was then found near Carlisle and Montgomery around five.
"They found the vehicle actually parked at auto zone. it was unknown to them, but the individuals were committing a shoplifting at the auto zone," said Chief Harold Medina.
In a press conference Sunday night, Medina says when officers approached the suspects one of them surrendered without incident. The other, who was holding a gun, fled while being ordered to drop the weapon.
APD says one officer fired at least one shot, striking the suspect. That person was taken to the hospital.
"Tentatively, we've identified both suspects and once we verify everything, these individuals have an extensive criminal history and probably shouldn't have been on the streets of Albuquerque to begin with," said Medina.
Saturday homicide investigated as justifiable
No officers were injured.
