Weather Forecast: Bitter cold ahead of a slow warm up
Dec 22, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Winter is certainly in full swing here in WNY. Temperatures wo;; remain in the teens for the remainder of today. With skies clearing out this evening, temperatures will be able to fall into the single digits for overnight loews, making for a very cold start to the holiday week.
Given the caliber of cold this weekend, I have a hunch some of our local bodies of water will likely start to ice over. Be VERY cautious, ice needs time to build & this cold will be short-lived. pic.twitter.com/eSsVlqFElj— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) December 20, 2024
As we approach the festive days leading up to Christmas, the weather brings a mix of conditions to prepare for. Monday will offer a slight reprieve from the intense chill, with partly sunny skies and high temperatures climbing into the low 30s—milder compared to the recent bitter cold.
However, Monday night into Tuesday morning, another Alberta Clipper system is expected to sweep through the region. This system is likely to bring fresh snowfall, with accumulations projected to reach 1 to 3 inches across most of the area by midday on Christmas Eve.
8-Day Forecast
With temperatures dropping again Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the ground will be sufficiently cold for that snow to stick around, ensuring that the holiday landscape will be beautifully blanketed in white. For those dreaming of a picture-perfect white Christmas, it looks like Mother Nature is granting your wish this year!
As the week unfolds, we’ll enjoy a brief break from the harsh grip of winter. On Thursday and Friday, mostly sunny skies will dominate, bringing a welcome change of pace. Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to upper 30s, offering a milder, more comfortable feel—perfect for spending some time outdoors perhaps.
For those of us who are bracing the frigid temperatures and absolutely hating it: there is a light at the end of the tunnel. However, this stretch of weather will be short-lived. By the weekend, temperatures will continue their upward trend, ushering in a milder, almost spring-like feel. While this warmth might sound appealing, it comes with a catch: increased chances of rain showers. This change could mean slick roads and damp conditions, so it’s worth keeping an umbrella handy and planning ahead for any outdoor activities.
