San Diego shoppers race to snag lastminute gifts

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — With only few days to go until Christmas, shoppers scrambled for those last-minute gifts on what the retail world has dubbed "Super Saturday."
During the evening hours at Fashion Valley Mall, a constant line of cars could be seen as shoppers tried to get into the parking lots.
“I came with my Christmas money," said shopper Yvette Guerrero. She had one word to describe the lines at the stores she visited -- long. "Like from the door to the cashier, like it was long,” she told FOX 5/KUSI.
Her sister, Aicila Revilla, says they took an Uber to the mall, which ended up paying off.
“It was a lot of traffic. Like right now, it’s probably not that packed how it was in the morning. In the morning it was more,” she explained.
With security personnel directing traffic during peak hours, drivers inched closer to finding a parking spot. Making it inside the stores also requires plenty of patience.
“It was crowded," said Mia Martinez, another shopper. "Went to Forever 21 and it was like I felt like I couldn’t breathe. It was horrible.”A
And then there are the long lines. “I went to another store and I did the line for like 20 minutes,” said Martinez.
For those looking to score a deal, there is no shortage of discounts.
The National Retail Federation’s latest survey shows clothing and accessories top the list of gifts, followed by toys and gift cards. It also shows more than 49 million Americans plan to shop in-store only, which is down from nearly 53 million last year.
Waiting until the last minute can be stressful, but some find ways to cope.
“I listen to music," said Revilla. "I carry my headphones with me a lot.”
For others, risking an empty shelf is a chance they take. While some like to plan out their shopping ahead of time, it's inevitable others will fall into the other category.
“Last minute, yeah always because I get the pressure," said Martinez. "So it's like, oh I need to buy it now.”
The National Retail Federation says an estimated 157.2 million consumers planned to shop on the last Saturday before Christmas, which is up from last year.
