Brookside lights up with Chiefs pride, Christmas spirit for the holidays
Dec 22, 2024
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City neighborhood known for having some of the best Christmas lights in the metro is rolling out the red for the Chiefs for the second year in a row.
The Brookside neighborhood is just off Ward Parkway, and its residents started the tradition last year after when the Chiefs played on Christmas Day. A few months later, they won the Super Bowl.

Now, the decorations have become a bit of a superstition.
From giant Chiefs blow-ups to funny signs and cutouts of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes to red and gold lights on all the houses and trees, these fans are all in. And when new homeowners move into the neighborhood, they are informed of their holiday duties.
"When we moved in, the owners that we purchased the house from told us you have to be ready for Christmas," Brittany Robb, a resident of the Brookside neighborhood said. "Don't buy lights yet because there's a new theme every year, but you will get a letter and the letter will outline the theme."
Although the tradition is meant to be a fun and beautiful display for neighbors and visitors to enjoy, there is some stress involved. Especially when you hear what's at stake if you don't follow the expected guidelines...
"We thought, 'Okay they really do take this seriously,' but then we found out that if you do not comply, the lure is that you will get a toilet seat with a Santa put in your yard," Robbs said. "We certainly didn't want that to happen, so it was a lot to move into we were like, 'We got to prepare.'"

You heard that right... A Santa sitting on a toilet. This just proves the Brookside neighborhood means business.
The fun doesn't stop there though, because the residents of Romany Road do something a little extra on Christmas Eve. They put luminaries in front of all the homes, giving visitors and drivers a beautiful route to fulfill all their Christmas light-seeking fantasies.
