ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- A nine-year-old child was rescued from a neighborhood pond by Allen County Sheriff's Department officers and the Fort Wayne Fire Department water rescue team on Sunday afternoon. Calls for the water rescue, located in the 13100 block of Slash Pass came in just before 12:30 p.m. A public information officer for DNR in District 2 told WANE 15 that upon arrival the Fort Wayne Fire Department water rescue teams recovered one child from the water. They were taken to an area hospital in critical condition. According to the DNR officer, two male juveniles were playing by the neighborhood pond when one of the boys fell through the ice. The other boy attempted to help him out of the water and fell through the ice himself. The juvenile that was trying to help his friend out of the water was able to rescue himself. He then got the father of the boy that had fallen in. The father went out into chest deep water searching for his son. Divers with the FWFD found the boy in the water. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The DNR officer told WANE 15 that the other boy is doing alright and that the father was checked for hypothermia. WANE 15 crew at the scene saw Allen County Sheriff's officer vehicles alongside FWFD water rescue and West Central Fire District vehicles. Allen County Public Information Officer Adam Griffith told WANE 15 that the primary agency for the investigation is the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which will handle any information going forward.
