DENVER (KDVR) — Over 150 people were rescued Saturday after a gondola malfunction at Winter Park Resort, a spokesperson confirmed to FOX31.
According to the resort, the mechanical issue happened at 12:15 p.m. The gondola immediately shut down, which is how the system is designed. This is for safety reasons.
Jen Miller, the Public Relations and Communication manager with the resort said ski patrol began rescue efforts at 1 p.m.
Ski patrol finished rescuing skiers and riders at 6 p.m., Miller said.
In total, 174 people were rescued by ski patrol.
According to the resort, the gondola remained closed Sunday for repairs and inspections, and the Colorado Tramway Safety Board alongside the gondola manufacturer, Leitner Poma, arrived at the resort shortly after the malfunction was detected.
The safety board oversees and licenses all chairlifts and gondolas in the state.
The resort said both were working to determine what happened and help repair the lift. As of Sunday repair efforts were underway and a broken piece that caused the malfunction was removed.
A thorough inspection by the safety board will have to be completed before it can open again, according to the resort.
The resort did not have an anticipated timeframe for when the gondola would reopen.
