NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – One local group has received some game-changing donations which they said will help them in their work to get New Mexicans housed. For decades, Homewise has helped thousands of New Mexicans across the state become homeowners.
Now, they are receiving $25 million from the charitable organization Yield Giving run by billionaire Mackenzie Scott. Yield Giving helps nonprofits around the world.
Homewise is also receiving another $10 million from the Anchorum Health Foundation in Santa Fe.
“As so many people know achieving the dreams of homeownership feels even harder today than ever before. So, this is a perfect time for this gift. It’s going to allow us to expand our lending programs that help first-time home buyers and others build wealth and achieve their dream of homeownership," said Chief External Affairs Officer at Homewise Johanna Gilligan.

Homewise, which is based in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, said the funds will also help in their own development of homes. “We build homes because often the markets are not delivering homes that are affordable to first-time home buyers. So, it will be used to help subsidize our construction costs,” said Gilligan.
Homewise said the $25 million is the largest donation it has ever received. The organization said the donations will be used to create energy-efficient homes for its clients.
“We'll use it to launch a green lending program for existing homeowners which is designed to help homeowners reduce their operating costs in their homes,” added Gilligan.
According to Homewise, they've helped nearly 400 people find an affordable place to call home in 2024. That includes Gabriel Ortega who bought a home in January with help from the organization. He said he received down payment assistance.
“It is very important because there are so many families that are able to make their mortgage, but they just need that jumpstart and Homewise is that jumpstart for families,” said Ortega.
