ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — First responders in the community were honored for their heroic actions Saturday night for the second annual First Responders Appreciation night, a partnership with Hilton and Greece Varsity Hockey teams. One of the first responders honored Saturday spoke face-to-face with the women he helped and explained to News 8 what it took to jump into action. Two women were traveling from a doctor's appointment, when suddenly the woman driving began to act unusual. "We were talking everything was fine; she was her usual self. But we got up to maybe Stone Road and she started getting really quiet," said Suzanne Wollschleger, the woman's sister. "I noticed my sister - she was making some gasping sounds." As they approached the next intersection, Wollschleger said her sister was headed right for a van stopped at the light ahead of them. She was unable to stop her sister, who appeared to have had some sort of medical emergency in the moment. The two ended up hitting the van. Wollschleger said just minutes later, fire crews arrived, pulled her sister out of the car and sprang into action to care for her. Winter Wonderland 5K debuts during ROC Holiday Village "To our surprise, everything was successful and we're here today. This was a pretty special event. You don't normally get to do this, especially meet the person that you were taking care of, let alone just get follow up information," said Andrew Cary, a firefighter with Ride Road Fire District credited with helping at the scene. Cary said being able to receive some form of closure is not only a relief, but a huge blessing. The event was free to attend, though donations were encouraged to support the Hilton Fire Explorer program and hockey team booster clubs. The Life-saving award ceremony also featured a special puck drop prior to the varsity game. The first responders featured Saturday took part in the ceremonial face-off, officials said.
