SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A little more than a year after Peter Seidler, the chairman and owner of the San Diego Padres, died, the team is announcing the next control person -- Peter's oldest sibling John Seidler. In a statement on Saturday, the San Diego Padres announced John Seidler, entrepreneur and business executive, will be taking control of the Padres, pending approval by Major League Baseball. San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler dies at 63 Peter Seidler, owner of the San Diego Padres since 2012, died in November 2023 at the age of 63. Since Seidler’s death, Eric Kutsenda has been serving as the team's interim control person. Seidler’s older brother, John, will now be running the organization after a playoff season where the team advanced to the National League Division Series (NLDS) before being defeated by rival the Los Angeles Dodgers. John has been a minority owner of the Padres since 2012. The San Diego Padres said in a statement on Saturday, “It has been just over a year since we lost our Chairman Peter Seidler. He would be incredibly proud of the team’s grit and performance this past season but mostly grateful to the Padres fans whose loyalty and support inspired them.” Tatis Jr. dons specially designed cleats to honor late Padres owner “Since Peter’s passing, Eric Kutsenda has served as our interim control person. Peter’s youngest brother Matt, as trustee of Peter’s trust, is pleased to announce that John Seidler, Peter’s oldest sibling, an accomplished entrepreneur and business executive, will be the Padres’ next control person, pending approval by Major League Baseball." “Peter never viewed the Padres as ‘his’ team. Instead, he saw the team as an asset of the community of which he was a faithful steward. John shares Peter’s vision and will continue to strengthen and nurture this great franchise, its players, fans and employees, and the entire San Diego community.” Late Padres owner to be honored with street name outside Petco Park The news comes shortly after manager Mike Shildt and the Padres agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2027 season. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Kutsenda and the rest of the team’s senior leadership, including CEO Erik Greupner and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller, are expected to remain in the organization.
