SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It's World Basketball day and thousands of fans gathered at the MassMutual Center for the 2024 MGM Springfield Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. The games were played in the birthplace of the sport Saturday. UMass Amherst took on Arizona State University at 4:00p.m. Later that evening, Rhode Island played Temple. UMass fans were eager to see their favorite team at the MassMutual Center. Final score from the UMass VS. Arizona State game, ASU 78 UMass 62. "This is the second year we've come back for this game. It's just exciting because my husband and I met at UMass, and my dad lives around here, so it's just a good time to get together before the holidays," says Molly Gardiner of Boston. "Go UMass! I grew up in Northampton... 10 minutes from campus, so I've been going to all the athletic games my whole life. Now that I live in Westfield I get the chance to come to Springfield often and jump on it" says Dan Dunphy of Westfield.
