ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) –The power of a good wash, cut, and style doesn't just leave us looking good, but feeling good too! "I think this is a great setting for people that are in recovery because the people that are touching their heads and the seats that they're sitting in in itself is like counseling, right?" said Antoinette Lucero, from State of the Heart Recovery.
A good haircut is more than just a change in appearance. The fresh transformation can also positively affect your self-image and confidence. This is why State of the Heart Recovery decided to offer free haircuts, to 'taper' those negative experiences from the past.
"So when you get in that chair and you got somebody coming into your doors that are coming straight off of the street, you want to feel that confidence in them. You want to make them feel beautiful. You want them to know that they are somebody," continued Lucero.

Kids and parents alike were able to get a free cut and style, some Christmas presents, and a hot holiday beverage, but most importantly, they were able to talk to people who could help them take those next steps to recovery.
"So, our community is struggling right now. It's very important that we're here for each other, you know? Substance abuse and mental health is very prevalent in this community, and we're here to take it back," said Kaylenn Tatum, a student at the Route 66 Barber School.
Tatum told News 13 that when someone sits down in her chair, conversations are mutually beneficial. The sanctity of the chair allows people to speak freely.
"Our people are able to give back and feed life into the people that are struggling. And that way, they know that there is hope here at the barber school," emphasized Lucero.
