BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The Williams County Sheriff's Office has helped imprison two men responsible for scamming local elderly women out of thousands of dollars. The department says they originally brought the case to the FBI last year after officers had learned of a local falling victim to the scam. The U.S. Attorney's Office says that multiple scammers were posing as high-ranking U.S. military members on social media to lure elderly women into sending them money. The scammers, authorities say, cultivated fake romantic relationships with the victims to receive thousands of dollars in monetary gifts. Records show one victim from New Town was scammed out of $200,000 total. Williams County officers say they were an investigating agency in this case and helped trace the scam back to two Maryland men. Now, the two men have been sentenced to 25 months and 10 months of imprisonment respectively.
