Weekend BRB: Stories with Santa at the Dakota Zoo
Dec 21, 2024
BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — Christmas may not be here just yet, but many local groups are already getting into the holiday spirit with events that bring early doses of Christmas cheer to their communities. A perfect example of this is Stories with Santa at Bismarck's Dakota Zoo — a time-honored tradition that brings wintertime and wildlife together in one place.
This year's edition of Stories with Santa begins at 1:15 p.m. each day, when Mr. Claus himself begins the afternoon by reading holiday tales in the Discovery Center's meeting room. Following 30 minutes of stories, he remains in the center for child and family pictures from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
"We started Photos with Santa at least ten years ago," explains photographer and Dakota Zoo board member Rich Barrios. "On average, we take around 25 to 30 photos per day, and shoot for three weekends before Christmas. For the first few years, we'd run to the office to print out pictures that we took. Now, it's evolved to the point where we link the camera to a computer instead, where the photos are edited, printed, and emailed to the parents."
While waiting their turn for photographs, guests can enjoy the warm climate of the building, holiday decorations, and refreshments available for an extra fee. As one might expect for a fundraiser with over a decade behind it, the modern incarnation of Stories with Santa is a favorite of both guests and organizers, and many schedule their winter zoo visits on event weekends.
"The crowd we get varies by year," Barrios continues. "We usually take pictures of the kids, but they'll often bring their parents or entire families, so we'll photograph 30-50 people a day. The community reception has been very positive... I don't think I've ever heard any complaints."
It should be noted, however, that Stories with Santa is not the only attraction present during the weekend festivities. Barrios states that the rest of the Dakota Zoo is also open during its usual winter hours on the same day, allowing guests to see their favorite exhibits in a snowy setting.
"As long as you're comfortable with the weather, there's plenty to enjoy," he states. "Most of the birds and reptiles have been removed to keep them warm, but you'll be able to see a lot of animals who are a lot more visible and active with their winter coats."
Weekend BRB: Holiday shopping at the Bismarck Big One
When the warm indoor celebration is combined with a unique zoo environment in winter, it creates a unique experience— and above all else, a great way to help ensure that a family's holiday spirit is as strong as possible in the days leading up to Christmas. But families aren't the only ones who see the benefits: board members note that the story and snapshot session helps bring customers in during cold weather, and even the holiday hero relishes the chance to interact with the children of Bismarck.
"It draws a crowd, and there's more of a turnout than most days," Barrios concludes. "This is a fundraiser first and foremost. I think that people who show up to the event already have their Christmas spirit, but having this available for those looking to activate it is a great thing to help bring people in, especially during this time of year.
"This fundraiser helps feed the animals during the winter months, so it's a great thing to do," adds Santa. "Mrs. Claus and I really enjoy it. We love talking with the kids, and taking pictures with them. It makes their weekends, and it makes their Christmases."
Santa will be back at the Discovery Center for storytime and pictures on Sunday, December 22, before heading off to begin his annual voyage around the world. For more information about the Dakota Zoo, visit its website here.
