CHARLES COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG) said its Independent Investigations Division (IID) is investigating after deputies in Charles County shot and killed a man on Friday.
On Dec. 20 at about 3 p.m., deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to a home in the 7300 block of Tottenham Drive in White Plains after a 911 call claimed there was a kidnapping and sexual assault taking place there.
The OAG said that dispatch records show that when deputies arrived, they saw a man wearing a mask inside the home. Deputies then came into contact with the man inside the home's two-car garage, which was left open.

During the interaction, deputies discharged their guns, hitting the man, according to the OAG. He was transported to the hospital, where he died.
The sheriff's office said preliminary information shows the man "refused to comply" with officers' verbal commands. He also allegedly indicated he was armed and threatened the deputies before he "intentionally positioned his body in a shooting stance." That's when three deputies shot him.
Deputies did not find anyone else inside the home, and an investigation showed that the 911 call had been made from the man's cell phone, according to the CCSO.
The shooting and the circumstances surrounding it remain under investigation. Per CCSO policy, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.
Some of the deputies were wearing body-worn cameras. The IID typically releases body-camera footage within 20 business days of an incident; however, this is subject to change.
