Weather Forecast: Bracing the cold for the rest of the weekend
Dec 21, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The winter solstice has finally arrived, and certainly feels like it! Temperatures have been decreasing throughout the day with feel like temperatures near the sub zero mark. Temperatures will fall close to single digits for overnight lows.
Given the caliber of cold this weekend, I have a hunch some of our local bodies of water will likely start to ice over. Be VERY cautious, ice needs time to build & this cold will be short-lived. pic.twitter.com/eSsVlqFElj— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) December 20, 2024
With Sunday’s winds expected to ease up, today might actually feel colder despite similar temperatures. That brisk chill in the air will make it essential to layer up if you plan to head outside. Whether you're tackling last-minute Christmas shopping or cheering on the Bills, be sure to bundle up—consider wearing more than one jacket and don’t forget those mittens to keep your hands warm.
8-Day Forecast
Looking ahead to Christmas week, Monday will bring slight warmer conditions from the bitter cold of the weekend. While the morning will start off chilly, temperatures will be a bit more bearable. The day will begin with mostly sunny skies before clouds gradually roll in later. By Christmas Eve, another clipper system is forecasted to move through the area, bringing with it the likelihood of snow showers. With surface temperatures cold enough for accumulation, the snow is expected to stick, setting the stage for a classic white Christmas—a treat for anyone dreaming of a snowy holiday scene.
As the week progresses, we’ll see a break from the wintry weather on Thursday and Friday. Mostly sunny skies and milder temperatures, ranging from the mid to high 30s, will provide a brief break from the cold. However, this calmer pattern won’t last long. By next weekend, temperatures will trend upward, becoming more mild, but this shift will come with increased chances of rain showers.
For those of us who are bracing the frigid temperatures and absolutely hating it: there is a light at the end of the tunnel. While the first half of Christmas week will be on the colder side, the second half of the week is looking to be on the warmer side with temps in the 40s pic.twitter.com/DnqNI6oend— Leanne Byer (@LeanneByerwx1) December 21, 2024
Whether it’s snow for the holiday or rain to close out the week, the ever-changing weather promises to keep us on our toes. Be prepared, stay warm, and enjoy the festive season!
