Cold sunny start to winter
Dec 21, 2024
Winter has finally arrived in the Carolinas, and Mother Nature will certainly be in a festive mood over the next few days. While no snow is in the forecast this weekend, temperatures will drop like a rock this Saturday night into the 20s and teens across the board. Abundant sunshine returns on Sunday, don’t expect a roaring rebound in terms of temperatures; highs will struggle to get out of the 30s and lower 40s to close out the weekend. The cold sunshine continues into the start of the workweek, although temperatures may be more inclined to jump into the upper 40s in the Piedmont on Monday.
A coastal system will develop along the Carolina shoreline by Tuesday morning. While this storm likely won’t bring rain outside of a stray shower to the Sandhills, it will push more clouds into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day Wednesday is looking partly-to-mostly cloudy with temperatures near normal in the 40s and 50s. A stray shower is possible Christmas night as a weak disturbance approaches from the southwest. Medium-range models are pointing toward another winter wedge setup towards the back half of the week; expect the clouds to stick around as rain chances hop into the stray-to-isolated range on Thursday and Friday.
