Unfortunately for Browns, quarterback pickings slim in 2025 draft | Jeff Schudel
Dec 21, 2024
A little more than four months from now, on April 24 to be exact, Andrew Berry will do something he hasn’t done since 2021 — make a selection in the first round of the NFL draft.
The Browns (3-11) would pick seventh if the draft were today. Of course, things can shift with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The Giants and Raiders are tied for the worst record in the NFL at 2-12. The Patriots, Panthers, Titans, Jaguars and Browns are all 3-11. The Jets and Bears are 4-10.

If the draft order does not change, or if they end up with one of the top six picks, the Browns will have their earliest pick since former general manager John Dorsey selected Baker Mayfield first overall in 2018. Four other quarterbacks were also picked in the first round that year. Sam Darnold went third to the Jets, Josh Allen seventh to the Bills, Josh Rosen 10th to the Cardinals and Lamar Jackson 32nd to the Ravens.
Berry has made 37 draft picks in five years as the Browns general manager. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, selected in the fifth round in 2023, is the only quarterback he drafted. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is the only player drafted by Berry to make the Pro Bowl, but that is a topic for another column.
Quarterback is the Browns’ biggest need looking forward to 2025. Unfortunately for them, quarterbacks in the upcoming draft are not highly rated. Plus, the Giants, Raiders and perhaps the Titans are desperate to improve the same position.
CBSSports.com ranks Cam Ward from Miami (Fla.) (fourth overall) and Shedeur Sanders, son of Deion Sanders (10th overall), as the only two quarterbacks worthy of a first-round pick. Pro Football Focus concurs, but PFF ranks Ward 19th overall and Sanders 29th.
The worst thing the Browns can do is pick a quarterback higher than his talent deserves. The Steelers learned that the hard way when they made Kenny Pickett (20th) the only quarterback taken in the first round in 2022. The 49ers moved up to take Trey Lance third overall in 2021. A year later they took Brock Purdy with the final pick (262). They saw enough of Purdy as a rookie to give up on Lance and trade him to the Cowboys in August 2023 for a fourth-round pick.
It doesn’t have to be first-round or forget it in the search for a young quarterback for the Browns. Jalen Milroe of Alabama, Quinn Ewers of Texas and Carson Beck of Georgia should be available when Berry is on the clock in the second round on the second day.
Whether or not they draft a quarterback, the Browns must add a veteran quarterback to the roster. Re-signing Jameis Winston is a possibility. If they go in another direction, they should consider signing Daniel Jones, who is currently on the Vikings’ practice squad. Steelers quarterback Justin Fields will be a free agent in March.
Whatever the Browns decide, they can’t depend on Deshaun Watson being ready for the season opener next September as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The only players Berry picked in the first round were offensive tackle Jedrick Wills 10th overall in 2020 and cornerback Greg Newsome 26th in 2021. He didn’t have a first-round pick in 2022, ‘23 or 2024 because he traded them to the Texans as partial payment for Watson.
Wills, on injured reserve with a knee injury, is in the final year of his contract and unlikely to be back for 2025. Newsome, also on injured reserve (hamstring), is under contract for 2025.
Quarterback isn’t the only position the Browns need to improve in the 2025 draft. They need an edge rusher to pair with Myles Garrett, an offensive tackle, a running back, a wide receiver and a safety.
Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell, Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III and Georgia safety Malaki Starks are players Berry might consider if he does not take a quarterback with his first pick. Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan is projected as a top-five pick.
The NFL season is winding down. Draft season is just beginning for Browns fans.
• The Browns have nine draft picks in 2025. They have their own picks in rounds one, two, three, four and six plus the Bills’ pick in the third round, the Lions’ pick in the fifth round plus the Dolphins’ and Vikings’ pick in the sixth round.
