FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Saturday the American Legion Post 97 out of Auburn honored the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum with a check finishing off their fundraising efforts for a new memorial. In a check dedication Saturday, the American Legion Post 97 donated $15,000 to the museum to complete the $50,000 fundraiser for a new memorial honoring the Global War on Terrorism. Eric Johnson, the First Vice Commander for the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum said the fundraiser for the memorial began in the summer with a golf outing, where the museum group raised $10,000. Donations from visitors to the museum and others allowed the fundraiser to reach up to $35,000 with the last $15,000 coming from Post 97. "The combined OIF/OEF includes a tribute to the Global War on Terrorism and those that served in multiple countries, which are routinely forgotten in the shadow of Iraq and Afghanistan. These include countries like Yemen, Djibouti, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and dozens of other countries," Tim Schild, Board Member at the Veterans Memorial said. "We must not forget those who served to support the war effort in the United States, veterans served away from their families across the globe who despite not being on direct combat, still played essential roles in the War on Terrorism." The new monument is planned to be constructed out of Indiana Limestone and displayed on the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum property.
