TITLETOWN, Wis. (WFRV) - For many Northeast Wisconsinites, the snowstorm we had Thursday offered them the first opportunity to enjoy some of their favorite winter activities. Brown County officials opened up the cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails at the Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve for the first time this season on Friday. Officials said the storm dropped just enough snow to open up the trails. Local 5 News visited the trails on Friday afternoon and saw several people enjoying them. "The way this winter was setting up it didn't look very promising for snow before Christmas, so when we got this we were very excited," said Jason Petrella who is the Brown County Parks & Recreation program and natural resource manager. He said the start date this year for the trails is a tad later than in other years. However, he said they've also had years where they couldn't open the trails until January. University of Wisconsin-Green Bay committed to Doug Gottlieb for the long haul Trail passes help the county maintain the trails and ski and snowshoe rentals help them fund some of their outdoor programming throughout the year. "Some of us don't like the cold and I get that but also just getting out in the cold for a little while it really helps your mental state," said Petrella. A Green Bay city official said they don't have enough snow quite yet to begin offering tubing. The parks and recreation department in Green Bay updates the status of the tubing hill frequently on this Facebook page. Over at Ariens Hill in Titletown, tubing has been open since Wednesday. Titletown officials make their own snow so they were able to offer tubing ahead of all the snow arriving from the snowstorm on Thursday. Cold temperatures begin the weekend A Titletown official said natural snow does usually help improve the overall quality of the tube hill. They're also excited that the snow arrived right before Christmas, saying a snowy Titletown has made the aesthetic there even better. "Absolutely life comes down to moments and these are the exact type of moments to have and remember," said Jesse who was enjoying some tubing with his daughter at Ariens Hill on Friday evening. Skating is also in full swing at Titletown. For more information about winter activities here, please click here. '
