URI Women’s Basketball Wins on Education Day, Snapping Skid

Rhode Island snapped a five-game losing streak in emphatic fashion, drubbing Saint Francis 77-37 Friday in front of a raucous Education Day crowd in the Ryan Center.
Rhode Island (5-8) limited the Red Flash (2-11) to eight points or less in three of the four quarters. On the other end of the floor, URI made a season high with 11 3-pointers as it got its offense on track in a big way.
The Rams scored the first five points of the game and never looked back. Sophie Phillips sank a pair of 3-pointers and Harsimran “Honey” Kaur added one of her own as the Rams used the perimeter to establish an early advantage. The defense forced nine first-quarter turnovers as Rhody scored 10 points off turnovers in the period. An Ayanna Franks jumper pushed the lead to double digits at 17-6 nine minutes into the game.
The onslaught continued into the second quarter, as Rhody scored the first 9 points of the period to extend its lead to 20 points after a pair of Hawa Komara free throws. Kaur added two more 3-pointers before the half ended as URI carried a 35-14 edge into the break.
The lead swelled to as many as 30 late in the third when an Albina Syla jumper put the Rams ahead, 57-27. The Rhode Island lead reached as many as 40 points as the Rams cruised throughout the final period.

The Education Day crowd 5,992 featured more than 5,000 elementary school students from 38 schools around the state.
Rhode Island forced a season-high 27 turnover. The previous season high was 25 against Stonehill in the season opener.
Rhody also matched its season low with just nine turnovers.
The Rams had a season-high 27 assists on 31 field goals.
Harsimran “Honey” Kaur matched a career-high with 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting. It was her second time with 21 points this season and third time overall. She had scored 21 twice before.
Kaur also had 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Sophie Phillips poured in 17 points while making five 3-point baskets.
Phillips now has 195 career 3-pointers, leaving her just two shy of the program record 197 by Charise Wilson (2014-18).
Forward Anaelle Dutat was the third Ram in double figures with 12 points and three rebounds.
Rhode Island’s points guards Sophia Vital and Ines Debroise combined for 15 assists and just one turnover.
Vital had a career-high eight assists to go with seven points and four rebounds. She had no turnovers in 22 minutes.
Deboise had seven assists and four rebounds.
Forward Hawa Komara had eight points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Katie Ledden had a career-high six points and two rebounds.
Rhode Island scored 24 points off turnovers and also had a 12-0 edge in second-chance points.
