Dog dies, family of two displaced in Chesapeake house fire

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) -- A dog has died and a family of two is displaced following a house fire in Chesapeake.
At approximately 2:50 p.m., the Chesapeake Fire Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of Hazel Avenue after receiving multiple reports of a fire.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke and fire coming from the single-story residence.

Crews made an interior attack on the fire while simultaneously conducting searches. While the residents were not home at the time of the fire, the family's dog was located and did not survive.
The fire was placed under control by 3:05 p.m.
One male was evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation, but he did not need to be transported to the emergency room.
The house sustained significant damage, and the occupants have made lodging arrangements with family.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
