BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — At Dutchtown Primary School, the last Friday of every month is a little brighter, thanks to the Dads on Duty initiative. On Friday, a group of fathers gathered at the school, dressed in festive holiday attire, to greet students as they arrived. With high-fives and words of encouragement, the dads helped kickstart the day on a positive note. Jeff Mire, a regular participant, said it’s about creating excitement and joy for the students. “It’s a way for kids to get pumped up in the morning,” Mire explained. “To see them happy pumps me up to go to work now.” The initiative, designed to build stronger connections between families and the school, is already making an impact. Principal Sandra Lafred said the presence of the dads brings something special to the students’ mornings. “It brings joy,” Lafred said, adding that it also sharpens their academic focus. “They’re supporting them at the beginning of the day, so that gives them the urge and perseverance to do their best as they move throughout the school day.” Destination Louisiane: Walk through Baton Rouge’s new holiday experience Louisiana Lights For the dads involved, the program is more than just a monthly commitment. It’s about setting an example and making a lasting impression on the next generation. Barry Whittington, principal of Dutchtown High and a participant in the initiative, emphasized the importance of fathers’ involvement. “I think the influence of a dad can never go understated,” Whittington said. “It’s really important that all the kids see that their dads are here for them.” The Dads on Duty initiative has been embraced by parents, teachers, and students, bringing energy and positivity to the Dutchtown Primary community.
