Irondequoit, N.Y. (WROC) — Those who buy a home near the Seneca Park Zoo usually get a good deal, good neighbors and a good number of squirrels. They also get a not-so-good surprise. “After they move in, they come out and go sniff sniff,” said Karen McKinzie with a laugh. McKinzie was one of those newcomers six years ago and remembers that first whiff. “We first look to the dogs then we're like, no, that's coming from outside,” she said. It's hard to know when the odor will arrive. “There is a waft that permeates every so often,” she said. But there is one constant. “It's horrible,” McKinzie said. “It actually will go in the house, you can smell it in the house.” There's no landfill nearby but there is the Genesee River, a water treatment facility and Eastman Business Park. The county says it's not the treatment facility, while Kodak says it's not the business park. The smell would provide a clue if it didn't change, which it does. “It's a very sulfur smell sometimes, but it's also a very sewage smell, it is not pleasant,” McKinzie said. “We hope it's a windy day when it happens.” To McKinzie, it's a nuisance and a health concern. “Well, I actually have lung problems so it is a concern for me,” McKinzie said. This week, the New York State Department of Environment told News 8 it “has found no definitive source for the foul odors in the Irondequoit area and continues to work to identify potential sources.” To McKinzie, the fact there's an going investigation is a breath of fresh air. “Oh, I'm all for it,” she said.
