Made with love: Original Candy Kitchen in Williamson recognized as historic business
Dec 20, 2024
WILLIAMSON, N.Y. (WROC) — Original Candy Kitchen in Williamson has been open since 1890, and the business is on its fourth-generation owner: Mary Boosalis Anagnostopoulos.
Boosalis Anagnostopoulos has been running the business for 35 years. She jokes she lives at the Candy Kitchen, and was almost born in the diner.
"My mom went into labor working here, she made it to the hospital, but it literally started behind the counter," she said.
The business has had three locations in Williamson since it opened. These days, they still serve chocolate, but the food service has changed from cold sammies to diner classics, like omelets, burgers, melts, and specials.
Boosalis Anagnostopoulos says they have been using the same kind of chocolate since the first day they were in business. But what is the secret ingredient?
"Probably the love that goes into it. We try to treat each customer like they're the only customer on the planet," she said.
Boosalis Anagnostopoulos says Christmas is always the busiest time of year, as her "Christmas elves" make candy for 12 to 14 hours a day.
Some of the goodies include iconic chocolate bars, assorted boxes, truffles, peanut butter cups and brittle, fruity treats, and specially-flavored candy canes.
All of it is made in-house, in a space behind the kitchen or on the upper floor of the building.
Boosalis Anagnostopoulos, who is hoping for a fifth or sixth-generation owner, says she is proud to accept recognition from the state for her historic business and to keep a family spot open.
"My staff is like my family, the restaurant is like my family," she said. "Knowing everybody, having four generations of customers… It's kind of like 'Cheers.' We all know each other, just a lot of love in a small town in a small community."
Original Candy Kitchen is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, and has extended hours for candy pickup.
