Frederick L. Tanzier (courtesy Shelby County, Ohio Sheriff’s Office) DAYTON, Ohio (KSNW) -- An Ohio doctor has been federally indicted on four counts of making false statements to an agency or officer of the United States and two counts of making or using a false document or writing. Federal prosecutors say Frederick L. Tanzer, 66, has been connected to three rape cases, including at least one in Kansas. Tanzer previously worked at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Hospital officials tell KSN he left four years ago. Federal authorities say Tanzer was only recently identified as a prime suspect in a violent sexual assault that happened over the course of five hours in Ohio in 1989. The Justice Department says in recent months, FBI agents were able to collect DNA from a coffee cup discarded by Tanzer, and testing showed it matched the DNA left at the 1989 crime scene. Agents questioned Tanzer, who reportedly denied having seen or having contact with the victim. Following his arrest, a search of his home allegedly found restraints, a gag, a black hat and zip ties together in a dresser. A recent filing related to detention alleges that two additional victims have been identified, at least one in Kansas. It alleges that Tanzer repeatedly drugged and raped the victims. The most recent case allegedly happened around two and a half years ago. Court documents also allege Tanzer used a burner phone to contact sex workers while he traveled for weeks and months at a time for work. The FBI is continuing to investigate to see if Tanzer is connected to any other unsolved or unreported sexual assaults. When the victim arrived home, she noticed an odor that smelled like brewed tea or burnt marijuana. The rapist was dressed from head to toe in black Lycra, including black gloves and a face mask. He had a black gym bag with him. The assailant held a knife to the victim’s throat. The rapist used white surgical tape from the gym bag to wrap around the victim’s eyes and head. He used stockings and pantyhose from the victim’s dresser to bind her hands and feet to the headboard and footboard of her bed. The rapist cut or tore the victim’s clothing and used Vaseline. The rapist assaulted the victim vaginally, orally and anally. In between bouts of sexual conduct, the assailant used a cloth to wipe the victim’s mouth and genital areas. The rapist said nothing during the entire encounter. He occasionally took breaks from sexually assaulting the victim while the victim remained tied to her bed. The rapist listened to and erased answering machine messages. He looked through papers in the victim’s living room and rummaged through her purse. He unplugged and/or disconnected telephones. On the handset of the telephone in the bedroom, the rapist taped a piece of newspaper that had been cut from the paper on the couch in the victim’s living room and wrote, “No police or I’ll be back Mis [sic] [name of victim’s employer].” The victim described the rapist as white, with dark brown hair, approximately six feet tall, with a thin or athletic build. The assault took place over the course of more than five and a half hours. Anyone with information can contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip to tips.fbi.gov. In addition to practicing medicine in Ohio and Kansas, Tanzer also practiced medicine in Colorado. State records show he was first licensed to practice medicine in Kansas in 2015, and his license is still active until July 31, 2025. Tanzer remains jailed while awaiting trial.
