SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Engineering students at Springfield Technical Community College went above and beyond to help one of their own.The students at STCC truly went above and beyond to help their fellow student, 24-year-old Gabriel Luppi. Luppi has a condition that affects his joints and makes it difficult for him to use his arms and legs.
The students applied their skills in STEM and 3D printing to create a unique and functional wheelchair that Gabriel can use with ease. It features unique upgrades such as a backup camera, LED lights, USB charging ports, and a custom controller handle.
"It has this feature called Eye Level," Luppi said. "That was what was a really a part of the thing. I love wheelchairs that like lift off. I could use it like to see machines a little bit easier to raise up to the monitors.
The students even incorporated parts from Gabriel father's 1952 Plymouth car. They also added a personal touch by putting their names on one of the wheelchair arms.
"When Gabriel saw it, when I looked in his eyes, I know we accomplished what we tried to do," said STCC Professor Joseph Sommers.
Gabriel says he is thrilled to see his vision finally come to life and hopes to see more wheelchairs like this one be built in the future.
