KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A King and Queen County woman is facing charges after authorities say the 4-year-old boy she babysits was mauled by dogs. At about 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, deputies with the King and Queen County Sheriff's Office were called to the Walkerton area for report of a child being bitten by a dog, according to a Dec. 20 press release from the office. When they arrived, deputies found medics had already arrived and were treating the victim, a 4-year-old boy. According to the release, the child was attacked by two dogs and suffered "substantial lacerations and [puncture] wounds to most of his body." He was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were considered life-threatening. As of the time of reporting, his condition has improved, but he remains in the hospital. Two men who shot Hanover horse in face to serve combined 15 years in prison Mary Lynn Sowards, the homeowner and babysitter of the victim, was arrested on Wednesday, Dec. 18 in connection to this incident. She was charged with one count of felony child abuse and neglect, according to the release. Additional charges are pending, according to the release. The two involved dogs -- a German Shepherd and a Catahoula -- were eventually captured, seized and impounded in the regional animal shelter. "Both dogs are expected to be processed for court action, deeming them as dangerous dogs," the office said. Sowards is out on bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6 at the King and Queen County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. This incident remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
