JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — In February 2022 16-year-old Dillon Viens was shot and killed in Johnston. Police initially believed it was accidental but it was later ruled as a homicide. “His philosophy in life was just to be a good person,” Dillon’s mother Rhonda Brewster said. “He was just there to be a friend.” Almost two years later Brewster said she was still looking for answers and justice after Viens was shot and killed at a home on Cedar Street in Johnston. “A lot of the information surrounding of what happened with Dillon is still unclear,” she said. “When the weapons came out, we don’t know what elevated that type of situation.” Brewster said she has continued to advocate for gun safety. “He was shot and killed. After that fact it’s just been trying to find justice and get stricter laws when it comes to gun control,” she said. “As we know the guns were accessible.” A memorial honoring Viens was on display at Johnston Memorial Park, which his mother said was a big part of his life. “It’s a sense of community,” Brewster explained. “He would meet a lot of his friends here. When he was at school, he would come after school to hang out with his friends in the park, a lot of the events for boy scouts were here. It was just a solidarity of our community and our love for Johnston since we relocated here.” Johnston police did arrest a juvenile in connection to the shooting. While Marios Kurios, the owner of the gun, who claims he was not home at the time of the shooting, was still in the court process. Meanwhile, Brewster was still waiting for justice for her son. “We’ll never get Dillon back; it’s a life loss. I can only imagine what my son would have been today at 19 years old,” she said.
