Human error contributed to Attleboro's water supply issue

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A factor that contributed to Attleboro's ongoing water supply issue is under investigation by the city.
Human error during the summer led to what Attleboro Mayor Cathleen DeSimone described to 12 News as "an unexpected and avoidable water loss" in June and July.

DeSimone explained that each year the city's water department "draws water from Manchester Reservoir to blend with/dilute the water" in Orr's Pond when manganese levels are high. She said water from the reservoir then flows through an aqueduct into the pond, which is drawn into the water treatment plant and opened by turning a valve.
Some water loss is expected during this process, the mayor said, but the water loss was "greater than expected" due to "oversight and communication issues," leading to it not being quickly addressed.

Attleboro City Council President James Dilisio said he wants to see the investigation's result before holding any public hearings regarding the matter.
As for who's responsible for the oversight and miscommunication, DeSimone said she couldn't comment at this time "because this is a personnel matter," but that it will be addressed in the coming days.
In a social media post on Friday explaining the development, the city asked residents to still practice water conservation.
