(WPRI) — Those who fish for striped bass can continue as normal next season. At a special meeting this week, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)’s Striped Bass Management Board voted not to enact stricter regulations for the 2025 season. They discussed the possibility of no-harvest or no-target seasons. Instead, the board agreed to work on an addendum to consider recreational and commercial management measures, if needed, for the 2026 season. According to the most recent 2024 stock assessment conducted by the ASMFC, striped bass are overfished and there’s a less than 50% chance of rebuilding the stock by 2029 as planned. Key challenges included low recruitment and the lack of strong year-classes to supply the fish. The ASMFC said the rebuilding plan will not meet its goal unless new measures are taken to rebuild the stock. During the 2024 season, the regulation for Rhode Island was one 28-to-31-inch fish per person per day. It also advised anglers to use circle hooks when fishing recreationally with bait.
