MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Families lined up in Downtown Memphis on Friday, waiting patiently for a mobile food drive hosted by St. Patrick Catholic Church. From frozen chicken to all the fixings, it was all provided by Mid-South Food. Dozens of volunteers worked for hours to distribute the food to those driving up and walking up. The first person in line arrived overnight, roughly 10 hours before things got underway. Photo by WREGPhoto by WREGPhoto by WREG "We are doing what Jesus said. When I was hungry, you fed me. And that's what we do here," said Father Dexter Noblefranca with St. Patrick Catholic Church. "Last night after the Grizzlies game, there was a car already here like 10 o'clock. So some stayed the whole night," said Father Noblefranca. Someone who did get an early start is a man named Ray, who arrived around 3 a.m. "This event is a great thing that's happening in Memphis right now," Ray said. Also pretty great is what he's doing -- helping out a neighbor. "I'm out here now for my neighbor Miss Louise, she can't make it herself, so I'm out here to grab a few things for her," said Ray. Whether they are walking up or driving up, the need is certainly great. But, so too is the effort to help our neighbors in need. 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. An army of volunteers like students from across the Mid-South joined forces with parishioners and other community members to fill the vehicles with food that will soon fill bellies. "We will provide food for 450 to 500 families," said Father Noblefranca. St. Patrick Catholic Church along South Fourth first started hosting a weekly mobile food drive during the pandemic in 2020. Nearly five years later, it continues, usually on the weekend, with the church saying they will keep at it as long as it's needed.
