Missing Georgetown College student case moved to “inactive” status by police
Dec 20, 2024
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Georgetown Police Department has provided an update on the investigation into the disappearance of Emma R. Smith, a 21-year-old Georgetown College student who was last seen on December 6, 2024.
According to police, Emma’s roommates discovered a “goodbye” letter, prompting them to alert her family, campus safety, and authorities. Following initial concerns, Emma was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as a “Missing-Endangered” person.
During the investigation, police say they collaborated closely with Emma’s family and mental health professionals. Evidence collected throughout the inquiry indicates that Emma meticulously planned her departure and left voluntarily, according to a Facebook post by the Georgetown Police Department.
Authorities report there is no evidence suggesting Emma poses a danger to herself or others. As a result, police say they are moving the case to an “inactive” status. However, police say Emma will remain entered in the NCIC as a Missing Person, and investigators remain prepared to reopen the case should new information emerge.
“Our hearts are with Emma’s family and loved ones as they navigate this situation,” Georgetown Police said in the post, expressing gratitude to the community for their support.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Georgetown Police Department.
