A fast moving clipper system diving into the Ohio Valley kept our weather cloudy and a bit unsettled for the final day of fall on Friday. A few scattered rain showers early gave way to snow showers  as additional cold air poured into the region, dropping temperatures into the low 30s by day’s end. The snow fell heavy enough to create whiteout conditions briefly and cover the grassy areas and rooftops in several spots. Heading into Friday night, snow showers will continue across Central and Eastern Kentucky with some light accumulations possible. The higher elevations in the southeastern mountains should see a few inches of snow but overall the widespread impacts should be low. There could be a few slick spots on the roadways, especially the bridges and overpasses so keep that in mind. The Winter Solstice occurs at 4:20 AM Saturday morning and right on cue it will feel like the beginning of winter along with the holiday season. A few leftover snow showers and flurries are likely in the eastern mountains and once again the low level moisture could potentially linger for a while through the day, which would keep the sunshine away and have a slight impact on temperatures. Even if the sunshine returns on schedule expect a cold Saturday with afternoon highs struggling to reach the mid-30s. The second half of the weekend looks quiet with more sunshine expected as cold high pressure sets up across the Eastern Great Lakes. This should hold afternoon highs into the mid-30s so the weekend will be unseasonably chilly from start to finish. As the high drifts eastward on Monday, a return flow will set up across the region with a southwest wind kicking in. This should allow temperatures to rebound quite rapidly with afternoon highs surging back into the mid to upper 40s, which is a bit above average for this time of the year. Overall it should be a nice start to the holiday week and a good day to get some of that last minute Christmas shopping done. The unseasonably mild pattern will remain in place as we roll into Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so it doesn’t appear that snow is on the table for this year’s holiday. However an unsettled weather pattern will kick back in with several waves of energy sliding through the region from Christmas Eve through the remainder of the week. While we aren’t looking at a washout on any particular day, persistent rain shower chances will be possible for the holiday but we should also see plenty of dry times as well. Of course the bigger story will be the mild temperatures expected through the period. Afternoon highs should climb into the low to mid-50s by Christmas Day and beyond, even with clouds and occasional showers expected. Just keep the rain gear handy as you’ll need it from time to time next week. ABC 36 HOUR FORECAST FRIDAY NIGHT: Breezy and cold, snow showers ending. Lows in the upper-20s.
