GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Greensboro has announced how they will handle the recent death of a sitting councilwoman.
The City of Greensboro announced on Friday that they'll begin accepting applications to fill Yvonne Johnson's at-large council seat on Jan. 2, 2025. The application window will run from the second through Jan. 17, 2025.
Anyone who wants to apply must be a resident of Greensboro, live within the city limits and be a registered voter.
Applicants will be able to speak during the city council meeting held on Jan. 28, 2025, and during that meeting the council will determine who will fill Johnson's seat. They will be sworn in during the Feb. 4, 2025 meeting.
Applications open Jan. 2, 2025, and can be found here.
Johnson died earlier this month at the age of 82. She served the city of Greensboro in various roles from 1993 up until her death on Dec. 4. She was a Civil Rights activist and broke barriers, being the first woman of color to be elected as Greensboro's mayor.
