Construction companies still do projects in the winter

MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Believe it or not, construction is still happening through the winter.
Titus Clousc of Heit Construction says they don't stop building even in these conditions.
He says they even lay concrete and have ground-thaw units to keep that concrete warm.
"Snow is probably the worst enemy of the cold because you have to dig out the job site and you can dig it in the morning. If we get a snowstorm like we did in the last couple of days, by noon what you just dug out is blown back in and already buried back in so just the manpower to dig that stuff out so you can keep the job site clean, not lose stuff, gets buried in the snow pile," said Clousc.
The downside is construction in the winter is that it's a lot more dangerous than any other time of year, especially with North Dakota's severe chills.

"To stay safe and warm, thermals and stuff like that. I would get like the heated jackets, the Milwaukee ones, they are pretty nice. To stay safe, if you are up and doing construction you know anything above 4 foot, 8 foot heights of exposure, I do make sure you are tied off, you are harnessed in, watched, make sure nothing is slicked over and wet," said Kaden Green.
But there are some projects they wait out the weather for.
"Concrete, foundation, stuff you would prefer to be poured on thawed ground just because of the expense to heat frozen dirt," said Clousc.
You can still be framing residential or commercial properties in the winter times.
"You can yes, like behind us, we got for the daycare rather than our guys out freezing and trying to hand frame this, we built it here in the shop and this is going over Monday and we are going to stand this up on the 23rd over the daycare," said Clousc.
He says production is a bit slower though with about a 15-20 % loss of projects.
But the most important thing to him and his team is keeping the ball rolling and making it home to their families.
If temperatures drop below zero the guys stop working outside and find other inside jobs to do.
