NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District’s Garrison Project has announced its 2024-2025 ice fishing access policies for Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon. This season, there will be 109 areas and points of entry to Lake Sakakawea, and 20 points of entry to Lake Audubon. These include boat ramps, shoreline access sites, and freeways in limited development areas. Some of the points are only accessible by foot. These points of entry will be in place as long as the lakes are covered with ice. The Omaha District's interactive web application that identifies access locations and their status is available here. A free ESRI ArcGIS Explorer application is also available for iPhone and Android phones. Search "Lake Sakakawea Ice Access" from the application to see where access points are located. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds people that driving on ice is always dangerous and is not recommended. Recreators should use extreme caution while on ice as open water may exist near springs and pressure ridges. NDGF shares two ice fishing announcements Anglers are required to use licensed, motorized vehicles and authorized public roads for entering and exiting access areas. Some public roads drift closed with snow and will not be plowed open. Access is allowed only for ice fishing, and operating a motor vehicle off-road to get access is not allowed during these conditions. All Title 36 regulations apply to ice fishing access sites. North Dakota Game and Fish (NDGF) wildlife management area regulations apply within all wildlife management areas located on U.S. Army Corps of Engineer land around the reservoir. NDGF also has regulations pertaining to the use of ice fishing spear houses within the state and the spread of aquatic nuisance species. To learn more about the regulations, go to the Game and Fish website. Lastly, check in with someone near the lake you're planning to go to. Bait shops, outfitters, game wardens, and public land managers are good sources to call for ice condition updates.
