BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Prairieville man accused of shooting and killing a man in the hallway of an apartment complex was arrested.
According to an affidavit, Joseph Joyeaux, 21, was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of Johnathan James, 27. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Dec. 19. According to arrest records, no bond amount has been set at this time.
On Nov. 16, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office were responding to a reported shooting in the 11700 block of Nicholson Drive. Upon arrival, deputies found James dead in the hallway near the stairs on the third floor.
Detectives obtained video footage showing Joyeaux with an AR-15-style rifle as he walked around the property for over an hour.
While reviewing the video footage, the camera captured audio, which caught Joyeaux reportedly asking a passerby if they saw a man with a hood on his head. The passerby said no and Joyeaux continued searching the property.
The affidavit states that before the shooting, Joyeaux put on a mask and started to move to the third floor of the building. Joyeaux reportedly ambushed James. During the ambush, James and another person were sitting in the hallway in front of a closed door. As the door opened, James stood up and started talking to Joyeaux before opening fire, according to arrest documents.
Deputies said Joyeaux fired several shots that struck James, which caused him to fall to the floor. While on the floor, Joyeaux reportedly stood over James and fired more shots. Joyeaux then fled the scene.
Detectives were notified by an anonymous source that Joyeaux was the reported shooter and was able to identify him through the video footage.
