Rain/snow mix turning to snow showers Friday
Dec 20, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Friday! We are tracking some wintry precipitation in the forecast for your day today. The day will start off with light rain showers before transitioning to a rain/snow and eventually all snow showers by the evening hours. Temperatures will be dropping throughout the day as well. After starting the day in the mid-to-upper 30s, we will likely end the day in the low 30s. As cold air moves in, you can expect a cold northwesterly wind that will make it feel closer to the low 20s.
Most of the area should expect only a coating of snow, while the mountains of southeastern Kentucky could see an inch or two of snow. Bell, Harlan, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Perry, and Pike counties have a Winter Weather Advisory in place through 6 a.m. Saturday due to the accumulating snow potential Friday through Saturday morning.
The snow chances today likely come in two waves, the first moving in around lunchtime as temperatures drop. This round won’t last long and we should see a break during the mid-afternoon for a lot of areas.
The next round is expected to move through during the late afternoon and evening hours. This could put down a light coating on elevated/grassy surfaces, but outside of the mountains the roads should stay mainly wet. However, as temperatures drop overnight, you’ll want to make sure you’re staying alert for refreezing on the roadways. Friday evening will be a great night to check out Christmas lights with the light snow falling!
There will be a few more light snow showers early Saturday morning, but things will be drying out during the midday and afternoon. It will be cold though, with temperatures only reaching the low-to-mid 30s. Sunday morning is expected to the best the coldest morning of this stretch. Morning lows on Sunday will range from the upper teens to the low 20s. Sunday afternoon will feature more sunshine than Saturday but it will be just as cold.
Christmas Week Look Ahead
Temperatures start to rebound on Monday, returning to the 40s for most of the area. This gradual warming trend will continue through Christmas and the end of next week. Rain chances do look to return Christmas Eve into Christmas day. It’s still early, but Christmas day doesn’t look to be a washout though there will be some rain chances throughout the day. We could make a run at the upper 50s and low 60s by the end of next week. Will this more mild pattern last into the start of January? It does appear that we could see some more shots of colder air during the first few weeks of January.
