The Jacksons set to perform iconic hits at Lone Star NYE
Dec 20, 2024
(NEXSTAR) - Two members of the iconic Jackson 5 pop band will usher in New Year's Eve as part of the Lone Star NYE broadcast. Marlon and Jackie Jackson are the headliners of the group "The Jacksons," performing a list of hits like “ABC” and “I Want You Back.”
You'll be able to see The Jacksons perform their hits (and you can sing along) on December 31 at 11:30 PM during Lone Star NYE. It'll stream on this website and air on television across the southwestern United States.
The Jackson 5, among the last of the major groups launched through Berry Gordy’s Motown empire, included teenage and pre-teen brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and lead singer Michael. “I Want You Back,” the group’s breakthrough hit, was openly modeled on Sly and the Family Stone and topped the charts in 1969. The Jacksons followed with three more No. 1 songs, “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There,” and also hit the top 5 with “Mama’s Pearl” and “Never Can Say Goodbye.”
The Jackson 5 became The Jacksons in the mid-70s when Jermaine left the group. Their later hits included “Enjoy Yourself,” “Lovely One,” and “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).” Michael Jackson became a multi-platinum solo artist in the 1980s, and his collaborations with his brothers became rare after the 1984 album Victory.
The Lone Star NYE performance will be an emotional occasion for the Jackson family as they perform without their brother Tito. The singer, 70, passed away from a heart attack on September 15. Tito was the third of nine children, including global superstars Michael and Janet, and was part of a music-making family whose songs have sold hundreds of millions of copies.
Tito was part of the modern version of The Jacksons alongside Marlon and Jackie. The group took a short hiatus following Tito's death but got back out on the road shortly thereafter, saying that’s what Tito would’ve wanted them to do.
"You make adjustments, but we’ve been doing this for so long,” Marlon said in an October interview with Shore Local Magazine. “Adjustments are part of what comes with the territory.”
The Jackson 5 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, introduced at the ceremony by longtime friend Diana Ross.
Raised in Gary, Indiana, the Jackson 5 was formed under the guidance of their father, Joe Jackson, a steelworker and guitar player.
Michael Jackson died at age 50 on June 25, 2009. Both Marlon and Jackie say they still feel Michael's presence when they perform together.
