A winter weather advisory is in effect for the mountains from 1pm today until 1pm Saturday. A clipper system is the driving force behind the snow in the mountains with much colder temperatures to follow as an arctic high settles in this weekend. Snow will begin in the mountains this afternoon with brief bursts of heavy snow possible tonight for the highest elevations. 1-3 inches of snow is likely above 2500 feet with up to 4-5 inches for areas above 5000′ through Saturday morning. Cold rain showers possible for the Piedmont this evening with temperatures ahead of the front reaching hte mid 50s this afternoon. Behind the front it will get breezy with temperatures falling fast overnight into the 20s and 30s. Highs won’t get above freezing for the Mountains Saturday with temperatures only reaching the mid 40s for the Piedmont. Temperatures will fall into the teens and 20s Sunday and Monday morning with highs only in the 30s to low 40s. Quiet leading into Christmas and Hanukkah with temperatures gradually warming up into the low 50s by the holidays. A disturbance could bring some wet weather by mid-week and will be something to watch over the next few days.
