Deputies seek leads in deadly 2020 shooting on Secessionville Road
Dec 20, 2024
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – It has been four years since someone shot and killed 22-year-old Nigel Covington on Secessionville Road. Deputies are still searching for answers.
Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded on Dec. 20, 2022, to a shooting at an address on James Island and found a victim on the porch of a home and Covington on a nearby dirt road.
Covington was dead, deputies say, and the other victim survived.
Detectives determined that the surviving victim, Robert Royale, had a visitor he knew in his garage. “When the visitor stepped out, the garage door was lifted, revealing disguised gunmen who started shooting into the garage,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said Royale retreated to his home, and then the front porch where he was found by responding deputies. The gunfire struck Covington.
Detectives said there was insufficient evidence to make any arrests in the case. They ask that anyone with information reach Detective Barry Goldstein at 843-554-2241.
