BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A Baton Rouge man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for a 2020 shooting spree that claimed the life of a two-year-old boy.
Kendrick Myles, 40, was arrested after what police described as a “rampage” in October 2020. According to the Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD), Myles kidnapped a 9-year-old family member before driving to a house on Osceola Street, where he forced his way inside and shot a man in the hand.
Myles then drove to another residence on West Upland Street, where he fired multiple shots. Two-year-old Azariah Thomas was struck and later died from his injuries at the hospital.
Later that night, Myles exchanged gunfire with a family member on Snipe Street before being apprehended by police on Swan Avenue. The kidnapped child was found safe and returned to their family, BRPD reported.
Myles faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, six counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of home invasion, aggravated kidnapping of a child, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In court on Dec. 11, Myles pleaded guilty to manslaughter and six counts of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 40 years for each count, with sentences to run concurrently and credit for time served.
Court records show Myles was previously diagnosed with bipolar schizophrenia.
