Congress scrambles to reach funding deal
Dec 20, 2024
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - The government is less than 24 hours away from a shutdown, unless Congress can accomplish a Christmas miracle in the 11th hour to fund the government.
House Democrats and dozens of Republicans rejected President-elect Donald Trump's plan, which included a two-year suspension of the debt limit.

After plan B failed for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), he says they now have a plan C to keep the government's doors open.
There was chaos on the House floor and a broken gavel, precursors to the second attempt at a government funding bill that ended up failing.
"It is I think really irresponsible for us to risk a shut down,” said Johnson.
38 Republicans joined with Democrats to vote down the bill pushed by President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk which would have funded the government for three months and raised the debt ceiling.

"It should have failed, I'm glad that it failed,” said Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.).
House Democrats say Republicans are not on the same page.
"There's obviously chaos on the other side of the aisle and it's a very bad omen for what's to come,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).
Speaker Mike Johnson says they are not giving up.
" We will regroup, and we will come up with another solution,” said Johnson.
In order to get a funding bill across the finish line Johnson will need Democrat support to make it happen.

Maryland Democrat Congressman Jamie Raskin recommends going back to the original deal that was negotiated for months.
"I would advise our Republican friends don't do this again, go back to the original deal,” said Raskin.
Johnson did not say what this plan C bill entails. Even if the House manages to pass a bill Friday it still needs to get through the Senate before reaching President Joe Biden's desk.
